Back to School: Does Your Child Have Myopia?

One thing that should be on that list is an eye exam for your child. Children learn with their eyes, so making sure they can see well is a MUST!
A common vision issue that usually starts around age 8 and progresses for the next 10-15 years is called myopia – also known as nearsightedness. It usually requires children to get a stronger prescription each time they have an eye exam, due to the eye growing longer.

Myopia increases the risk of developing glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachments, and atrophy.
But at BayState Eye Center, we offer a special Myopia Control program. It is specifically designed to minimize or stop the progression of myopia by preventing the eye from growing longer. Once the eye grows longer, you can not shorten it. So it’s important to start early. Since the program started, we’ve helped more than 100 children in our Mansfield office alone!
Shan is one of the many parents who have children in our program. Both of his sons are in it. Anay is 7-years-old and Samik is 11-years-old. Both take karate lessons, so they need sharp hand-eye coordination. Samik has been in our Myopia Control program for three years. His younger brother has one year under his (brown) belt. Their father knows it’s working.
And he’s right.
Samik’s prescription hasn’t changed since he started the program! “When they’re not in school, they’re playing sports, so they need good vision,” he added. Shan told us his friend’s son has myopia and he recommended looking into the program as well. “I love the staff and doctors. I haven’t tried another place. I know I trust BayState Eye Center and I don’t have to go anywhere else,” he said.
Thank you, Shan 🙂
