Parents & Grandparents: A Message from Dr. Hentschel

by | Aug 3, 2022 | Blog | 0 comments

We hope your summer is going well!

We just wanted to share a quick message from Dr. Alexander Hentschel, when it comes to children’s vision.

The summer can be tough to determine any changes in a child’s vision. So here are some questions to consider:

How many hours of screen time does your child/grandchild get each day? We’re talking iPads, computers, TVs, phones, etc.

Is your child getting headaches after an hour of use? Dr. Hentschel cited a study that shows 50% of the world’s population is expected to be nearsighted by 2050.

“That certainly indicates a lifestyle change,” Dr. Hentschel said. “Studies have confirmed that sunlight is protective against myopia. Best advice I can give is to let your children get some sun and let them be a kid outside.”

Dr. Hentschel also said to be on the lookout for increased eye rubbing, a lot of squinting, and even a lazy eye.

“In general, children are usually good about wearing glasses or contacts during the school year. However, they can get a little lackadaisical during the summer, so it’s important for parents to make sure their children stick to the routine,” Dr. Hentschel warns. “I can’t stress it enough: spend time outdoors. Daylight is important.”

Just make sure they’re wearing sunglasses outside 🙂
