5th Grader With Myopia Who's World Now Looks Brighter!

When a little kid says, “The world looks so much brighter,” that sticks with you.

Meet 10-year-old Bay Eye Center patient Aiden, the 5th grader from Norton. Aiden is a wicked smart kid, a really good friend, and a stud athlete. He loves soccer, lacrosse, and basketball.

A few years ago, when Aiden was in 2nd grade, he had an eye exam at school. The nurse suggested he visit an eye doctor. Aiden’s mom and dad were already patients at Bay Eye Center, so they brought their son to us for his first visit. When Dr. Lambert asked Aiden to read the letters on the wall, he couldn’t. It didn’t take long to figure out Aiden had myopia. He was nearsighted.

Dr. Lambert fitted him for his first pair of glasses. When Aiden put them on for the first time, he said something his mom, Julie, will never forget. “The world looks so much brighter,” he said. It was a pretty powerful moment for Aiden and his mother. Aiden wore glasses for about a year - until the end of 3rd grade.

Here’s the thing…myopia can worsen each year, well into a person’s 20’s. But Dr. Lambert was on a mission to make sure that didn’t happen to Aiden. So, she fit him for contacts. But they weren’t normal, soft contact lens. They were hard contacts, specially designed to stop the effects of myopia. In fact, they’re made of plastic! Aiden wears them overnight. When he wakes up in the morning, he takes them out and has perfect vision for the rest of the day. It’s like magic! In fact, Aiden’s mother says her son hasn’t experienced a vision change since his initial diagnosis, more than a year ago. And over the course of that year, he has developed a great friendship with Dr. Lambert. Aiden’s mom told us, “She was very tuned into making sure she was talking directly to him and creating that connection. That was established on his very first visit. He trusts her and that’s a huge part of it. He has taken her guidance from the very beginning. When things got frustrating, she was there for him.” The frustration has disappeared. Now Aiden can hang out with friends, ride his bike, and be a great big brother to eight-year-old Christopher…with perfect vision during the day.

Like most 10-year-olds, Aiden enjoys video games. He also loves animals. In fact, he’s thinking about becoming a veterinarian when he grows up. Aiden’s mother couldn’t be happier with the results Dr. Lambert delivered. That why she says this about Bay Eye Center, “We love it! It’s really wonderful and everyone we’ve met there is a real pleasure. I can’t imagine us going anywhere else.”
