In-Depth with Mike Sullivan: Introducing Dr. Erin Civetti, Bay Eye Center’s New Optometrist

Mike Sullivan: All right, joining us now is one of our new optometrists, Dr. Erin Civetti. We’re doing this video just to get to know Dr. Civetti. So Dr. Civetti, I want to ask you first, was there a specific moment that you remember when you said to yourself, “I want to be an eye doctor?” And why did you actually decide to become an optometrist?

Dr. Erin Civetti: So I knew for a really long time that I wanted to do something in the medical field. I went to UMass, my undergrad college as pre-med. I started to do a little soul searching, just trying to figure out what medical specialty I wanted to go into. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do the traditional med school route. I started to discover all the fields that we often forget about, you know, your eye doctor, a dentist, stuff like that. I shadowed a lot of really great optometrists, and it was really influential, and really kind of pushed me along to decide on optometry.

Mike Sullivan: Love that. So there are a ton of eye practices out there that you could have chosen to work with work for. Why did you choose Bay Eye Center?

Dr. Erin Civetti: So I actually grew up in Mansfield. So I was super familiar with Bay Eye Center. I actually worked for Dr. Timothy Lynch as a technician when I was in undergrad. So it’s been really exciting to come back to my hometown and kind of give back to the community that I grew up in.

Mike Sullivan: Dr. Lynch is the best hands down. You are a graduate of UMass (go Minutemen), and the New England College of Optometry. And I noticed you’ve gone on some mission trips to help others. So you truly enjoy helping people.

Dr. Erin Civetti: Yeah, absolutely. It’s so much fun to give back. It’s really rewarding. Um, the big one that I did while I was in optometry school was to the Dominican Republic. We were there for about five days. We gave numerous eye exams, gave out glasses, eye medications. It was such an awesome experience.

Mike Sullivan: And I know Dr Lynch goes on missions to Jamaica and Mexico each year. Is that something that you’ll probably explore?

Dr. Erin Civetti: Absolutely. I’m really excited to do that in the future.

Mike Sullivan: Love it. That’d be fun. So when you’re not at work, when you’re not helping people see better each and every day, what do you like to do?

Dr. Erin Civetti: I love spending time outdoors. I love doing, you know, 5Ks. I’ve done a couple half marathons. I did a triathlon for the first time last year and absolutely loved it! I was a big swimmer growing up, so it’s exciting to do that in a more competitive sense.

Mike Sullivan: Triathlon. That sounds impressive. How are the distances? How long was each?

Dr. Erin Civetti: I did a sprint one kind of just dipping my toes into the triathlon world. So, um, it was about a 600 meter swim, a 10k or sorry, 12k bike ride, and then a 5k run at the end.

Mike Sullivan: Love that. Congrats. And gonna stick to that distance or do you have plans to up those?

Dr. Erin Civetti: We’ll see, I think I’m gonna do another sprint one, see how I feel, and then maybe in the future I’ll do, um, the Olympic one, like the long one.

Mike Sullivan: I love that. Alright, so that’s a fun fact, but I want you to tell us one more fun fact that most people might not know.

Dr. Erin Civetti: Well, I’m a big animal lover. I have two cats and a dog at home. Um, my cats are Noah and Zelda, and then I have a dog, Apollo. So, love them very much.
